A duel for the ages
Danny McCreeOn the day of the great battle of the 22nd February 2025. The noble people of South Cambridge faced off against the barbarian Pelicans of Kings Lynn. The two sides selected the champion that would represent them in a bout that could decide the lower middle of Division 3NW.
There are contests which will echo through the ages. Achilles vs Hector. Hercules vs the Lernean hydra. Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield. Kasparov vs Topalov. Dave Shanahan vs the scallops he found in a bin behind the Regal. There is now one more pair of names to add to that list: Thomas Anns and Pelicans #17.
The two contenders met on the field of battle, close to the Southerners defensive line. As is proper, the two combatants bowed, turned their backs to each other and stepped 5 paces apart before turning to face their adversary.
With barely a moment to catch their breath, the two came together and the clash began. Anns began with a series of testing jabs, getting the measure of his opponent before engaging fully. An opening presented itself and he closed the distance, snatching the prize away from the Pelican. Unfortunately he was unable to hold on, and #17 took a swift return and pinned Anns in place, forcing him against the edge of the arena.
What followed next had echoes of a chess match, the two combatants locking wits in an attempt to get the upper hand in a constant back and forth.
The intellectual effort took a toll on the two duelists, and the cerebral back and forth steadily descended into a battle of brawn rather than brain. The contest fell into a deadlock, muscle tested against muscle as the prize held firmly between them like the filling of a custard cream. The onlookers stood agape as the bout continued for an interminable time, unable to intervene to help either party.
Eventually the stalemate broke in a sudden flurry of action, the intensity stretching seconds into what seemed like hours. Anns made his final gambit, sidestepping and allowing the Pelican to surge forward off balance toward the edge of the arena, careening out of bounds and it looked like the contest had been seized.
Unfortunately it was not to be, a trailing heel caught and turned the duel finally in the Pelicans favour, Anns left sprawled on the floor, distraught. The duel was finally over.
Also, some hockey happened and we won well done guys.
