Sunnies and a Sky Terrier

Luisa Ciampi

Bright sunshine and (finally!) some signs of spring accompanied us to our match against Newmarket. Having beat them earlier in the season we were feeling hopeful about this one!

After welcoming Daisy (stepping in for us from the 2s!) and Kath (saving the day by dusting off her Goalie Kit) we started the day off solving the challenge of ‘kit out the team’. We managed to find Daisy some socks which weren’t quite as yellow as Newmarket’s (which did involve duck taping them to her shin pads), and sourcing Louisa P a stick (which would have been top of the range back in the day!).

After a chic warm up accented by sunnies and guns out, we kicked off with the first push back. Despite the very slow Newmarket pitch, and some … erm … controversial refereeing, we started strong and played well. Slick passes through the mid field up to the forwards, saw us take multiple shots on goal and several short corners. Annoyingly, Newmarket managed to score two breakaway goals despite some ace defending from the back, and some particularly ace saves from Kath.

We regrouped at half time and were pretty sure we had it in the bag.

Despite the practically tropical heat wave we were playing in, we managed to hold Newmarket in the second half and also managed to dodge several very hard lifted hits. Our hard work paid off with Mo sneaking a goal in behind the Newmarket goalie after a beautiful assist by Daisy. Despite some charges up the field by some overly ambitious South Defenders, we couldn’t quite bring the game home as Newmarket scored a final goal. The final result was 3:1 to Newmarket.

Despite our loss, we came away from the game feeling like a good spirited, strong independent, ladies team ready to take on teas in the Men’s Working Club (a little dated no?) over the road. Joint POM went to Kath for excellent saves and Luisa C for some enthusiastic drives up the pitch. Although a close call between Daisy and Louisa P, LOM went to Louisa P for forgetting a fairly important piece of kit …

Another good day, full of sunshine, good vibes, pizza, and were even graced the cutest spectator Brodie the Sky Terrier.
