The fox got in the hen house

Rosie Brown

Training this week was a bit of a low-turnout, low-energy affair. El was scowling and Kendra’s fox mask slipped, we could not find the goal: Nev looked a touch exasperated.

But then - BAM! Saturday morning arrived, and suddenly we were all up on it. We were organised, our passes were secure, we communicated, and it was absolutely fab. For those strictly watchers amongst you, I feel a bit like Anton when he goes on one, only to conclude with ‘Cor, Wow, Look at that’ – but seriously – look at that! Carla chased everything down getting all up in City’s grill, Esther ran her socks off, Bex and Lou made cracking runs and passes, Ruth survived ankle chopping to steal the ball over and over, El W was a ‘scowling superstar’ tackling and creating a goal, Ellie R was a wall-legend who also attacked up the right, Lou R in goal was flawless, Avi was laser focussed (except when she dribbled off the pitch), Vinnie was indomitable everywhere– HELLO POM! And as for the Fox (aka Kendra), well she got amongst the hens… slipping one past City’s keeper about 15 minutes in. She was duly forgiven for pallying up to the oppo during warm-up (although not forgotten – hello LOM!). With the second half underway, Nev wasn’t wrong when he shouted ‘I feel number 2 coming’ (the mum in me did worry for a minute!): the Fox / Naomi (sharing is caring?) smashed in a second, and we held a clean sheet to the final whistle. Compared to other games against weaker oppos it felt like we were largely in control; at no point did the game get away from us, and …how extra sweet it is to beat City! Well played girls and thanks to our supporters Nev, Claudia and Josh!
