Goldies’ season debut

Lydia Neil

For the first time this season South Goldies assembled to take on St Ives O35 in the glorious October sunshine.

We recognised a few of the opposition from some tough matches in Div 2 for the L2s and L3s and we knew we were in for a contest.

With several players nursing niggles and others not feeling quite 'peak' we nevertheless got ready to take on the challenge.

We put in a real team effort, and worked well supporting each other. Ellie, Laura, Louisa, Nic and Julie worked tirelessly round the back. Hayley, Jess and Nicky bossed the middle and Anna, Kendra and Pedz were hunting for chances on goal. Lydia in goal was kept busy thwarting the St Ives attacks.

We faced down an increasing frustrated St Ives, who won many a short corner and, eventually, in the last few minutes, scrambled a goal - followed up by a breakaway second.

We came of the pitch knackered, very warm, defeated, but proud of our efforts. POM votes reflected the team effort with Julie picked out for the excellent short corner save on the line, and Hayley for her work rate and efforts to keep us in formation. The vote was narrowly won by Lydia who made some excellent saves.

LOM was almost unanimously awarded to Louisa who forgot her shinpads (thanks to the St Ives players for lending a pair!).

Good luck to St Ives in the Cup - we look forward to taking on the Plate competition
