M2 4-2 City of Peterborough Mens 3
Jim HockleyA classic was set to play out for South’s first league game of the season. City of Peterborough 3s have been a notoriously challenging fixture for South in previous seasons, somehow always managing to creep back into the game. This was true of our two clashes last year, both ending in draws with South typically going ahead only to be denied 3 points in the closing minutes. We knew we needed to contain their attack and remain disciplined throughout.
South started brightly with Bota at left back working well with Eric in the midfield, bouncing the ball in and out almost like we’d practiced it in training. South’s defence looked tidy with Harrison and Rob bossing the backline and Alec moving the ball well through the midfield. South look comfortable and control, remaining patient and turning over high in the pitch. A penalty corner to South afforded Harrison a chance to slot home a deflection from a short injection and we were away. The game began to become more stretched and another attacking move involving Creedy, saw the ball come loose in Peterborough’s D. Ash, hanging on the keeper, was happy to put away a second for South. 2-0. As the half progressed, Peterborough came back into the game and had a few decent chances pulling our defence into action. On their second penalty corner, a goal-line defensive foul led to a penalty stroke and goal putting Peterborough on the score sheet.
The second half saw a more patient South return to the pitch. With the thought of the prized MoM apple in mind, Jack continued his epic debut at screen and moved the ball beautifully connecting defence and midfield. South secured the win with 2 goals from your friend and mine Creedy, whilst Peterborough managed to pull back another to make the final score 4-2 to South. A fantastic opener for South as they start their 2025/2026 campaign.
