L5 1-3 Wisbech Town Ladies 3
A new season and a new line-up for the L5s. The first few minutes were a bit scrappy and chaotic as we all got used to playing together, and Wisbech got two early goals in. South did not lose the positive energy – rather, we increased it and began to gel together better as a team. Anna had another excellent game in her new home in defence. Rosie’s positioning and runs were excellent throughout the game, and she was rewarded at the end of the first half with a goal, getting the final touch after some South pressure in the D. Wisbech thought they had seen a South foot in the lead-up to the goal, and argued that it should not stand – which resulted in two of their players receiving cards and South started the second half with a two-man advantage. Unfortunately we did not capitalise on this for any more goals. South had a run of short corners but couldn’t convert any. We had only time for a couple pro pre-match practices, so this is definitely one to work on in training. Wisbech got a final late goal to win 3-1, but if you ignore the first 10 minutes, it was a draw! Our first match of the season was an enjoyable challenge with everyone working hard and keeping the energy and pace up throughout the game. Lydia made a welcome return to South and made several superb saves, making her a close second for PoM.
