Biscuits & Baking in Wisbech Sun
Avi IbayanIt was less of a hockey pitch and more of an oven at Wisbech this weekend – hot, sweaty, no breeze, players rising like malted milk biscuits left too long in the sun. Still, Cambridge South L3s set about the first half determined to cook up something special.
Within the first ten minutes, Bex smashed in the opening goal – crisp and satisfying, like biting into a fresh Bex-Leibniz biscuit. The midfield worked the dough beautifully, kneading passes and rolling out one-two’s with finesse. Wisbech were no crumbs, though: after a series of sticky short corners and some heroic on-the-line saves, they eventually jammed one in – more jammy dodger than dodged jam, sadly.
The heat rose. Everyone felt like a gingerbread man left too close to the fire. Then came the first green card: Gemma, whisked off for a “naughty naughty” timeout, like a custard cream that had split under pressure.
The second half was an even stickier batch. Avi fell (a proper crumbling hob nob moment), but South dug deep. The opposition baked up endless short corners, but Luisa stood strong – scooping, scraping, and saving shots on the line like a fox’s Viennese biscuit holding its delicate shape under strain. Legend.
In midfield, the screens pressed and spread the play like butter across a chocolate caramel digestive – smooth, sweet, and tireless. The passing and switching looked so clean you could have dusted it with icing sugar.
The goals came like trays from the oven: first Katie slotted home, then Wisbech equalised, only for Steph to pop up with the decisive strike. Each goal was served with great assists from Gemma, Lily, and Bex – teamwork layered together as neatly as a dark chocolate digestive stack.
But no feast is without a little overbake. Indi collected a green card near the end – naughty. Lily joined her in the final minute – equally naughty.
A well-baked victory. Crunchy defending, sweet attacking, and just enough spice to keep things interesting. Whether you prefer a jammy dodger, a hob nob, or even a “jaffa cake,” this match had every flavour of drama.
