Fives First Victory of the Season

Lou Walker

Today was a key achievement for the L5s as we finally broke the losing streak with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Long Sutton. Having had a run of games against teams at the top end of the table, we were expecting a closer game this time. But what really helped was having worked on training as a team together, and a good high energy warm up to get us raring to go from the first whistle. We tried a slightly different formation, with an extra midfielder and some players subbing in and out of different positions. With Chris masterminding from the sideline, it all worked out very nicely. The defence were solid and calm at the back, often taking the opportunity to push up the pitch and support the midfielders.

The 5s have already shown we can score goals – despite the run of defeats we have scored a goal in all but one of our previous games. Next level – score more than one, and more than the opposition. Objective achieved:

First goal – short corner, initial strike cleared but we got the ball back to Nicola P for a second attempt that was well struck towards the post and touched in by Lou.

Second goal – a lovely hit from Sophie at a tricky-looking tight angle. Her first goal for South and it was an impressive one.

Third goal (in the second half) – nice finish from Elodie after some movement around the D.

We were all buoyant to be 2 goals up at half time, but as Anna reminded the team, it wasn’t won yet. We kept up the energy levels and work rate for a strong second half and ended on a high and a win. Now we have a little green box on the website instead of a red one. This makes me happy.
