A win at home!
Shree ThirumalaikumarThe L4s headed to Long Road bright and early, on a crisp autumn saturday morning. After a few difficult weeks battling the second and third in the league, we were nervous. This was a winnable game, and the pressure was on!
However, we were armed with a brand new (ish) warm-up routine from coach George to make sure we start strong. It paid off immediately - a minute in and Kendra had scored! We celebrated and kept the energy high, with defence and midfield working hard to keep the ball in Wisbech's half. Nicole hassled their right forward so much that they both collided and ended up on the ground! This team effort led to a clinical 2nd goal from Naomi soon after. 2 goals in 7 minutes? Unprecedented for the L4s this season!
Proof that warming up works! However, at this point Wisbech had woken up, and attacked hard. Even with excellent defending and clearances from Rosie, Nicole, Ellie R, and Elly B, and some incredible saves from Zehra, Wisbech scored, bringing the score to 2-1 going into half time.
The second half saw the continuation of Wisbech's high press, with the L4s defense having to deal with constant overloads and our mids running back to help. This did lead to an equaliser from Wisbech, leaving us at 2-2! Stressful! Would we manage to come out on top?
The answer is yes! Some lovely play down the wing, with good triangle passes in the midfield led to a great pickup from Esther who slotted the ball home for goal number 3. After some strategic game management from our front line, and Katie keeping the ball in yhe top corner, the final whistle blew, with the L4s winning 3-2!!
POM nominations were spread across the board, with Nicole in defence, Frankie, Shree and Katie in midfield, and Kendra and Naomi up front, showing just how much we worked as a team. However, Zehra won for excellent goalkeeping, specifically coming out strong and intimidating towards a striker and saving a shot on goal (even while Elly B was telling her to get back in goal!)
