Match Report: L3s South vs St Neots 2s (Unbeaten and unstoppable… just about!)

Luisa Ciampi

It all started, as all great hockey days should, with brunch at Stir (with plenty of time for digestion scheduled in!) And with a sleepy looking Coach Ed, who odered a basic breakfast tea, but at least had extra chorizo. The L3s’ conversation was not focused on the impending game, but rather on our social plans for rowing across the Atlantic (we’re just waiting for the right sponsorship deal and waterproof mascara).
Spirits: high. Stomachs: full. Vibes: good.

We kicked off the the pre-match warm-up with Captain Steph’s Circle of Trust, a motivational masterclass reminding us to play for each other — and, of course, to keep the vibes alive with fist bumps. With a record-breaking squad list, we also had the rare luxury of a sublime subbing plan (we’ve honestly never seen so many bibs on the sideline!). Our warm up was pure vibes, with an elite playlist ft. Space Jam (finally!) And Spice Girls (obviously) powering us through dynamic stretches and questionable dance moves.

We knew St Neots would be our toughest test yet — organised, physical, and fast. But from the first whistle, we rose to the challenge. Man marking? On point. Screen play? Slick. Midfield energy? Relentless. Forwards? Furious. The result:
Steph’s sneaky penalty flick — the third this season.
An opening goal from Hannah, whose clinical finish put us ahead. Not long after, a cheeky tap in from Louisa Pimms.

At half time we were 2-0 up, but we reset with a “0–0 mindset,” knowing the game wasn’t done. And true enough, St Neots came roaring back, netting two goals in quick succession. But we didn’t panic (much). Selene pulled off a string of heroic saves, keeping us in the fight, while our midfield worked tirelessly to regain control. Then — cue fireworks — Indi unleashed an absolute stonker from the top of the D to secure the winning goal.

The closing minutes were all about calm, composed game management (mostly), and when the final whistle blew, we’d held firm to maintain our unbeaten streak.

Post-match scenes included Tina’s celebratory cucumber snack (hydration queen) and, LOM going to Vinnie, who dramatically stopped play mid-game because she’d taken off her numbered bib by mistake.

Final score: L3s South 3– St Neots 2 2
Unbeaten - yes. Unshaken - eh ... Unstoppable? Watch this space...
