L2s Match day experiment log
Nic FennellIntroduction
This study investigated the implementation of a multifactorial matchday plan against an Ely 1s side. This included the use of accurate passing, silky skills and the clinical and effective use of attacking short corners. Previous experiments investigating implementation, comparing the team to other opponents, have shown relatively successful results.
Aims and Objectives
During this experiment, we aimed to;
- Score goals
- Not concede goals
- That’s it really…
- Oh and have fun
Methods
Data was collected for 70 minutes total, which was divided into two 35-minute sections. Two independent investigators were present to record results which were presented in two forms;
1. Spectacular short corners
2. Magical open play
Results
After 70 minutes, the following was recorded;
- Nic: 1 goal from a short corner, achieved with clinical precision into the bottom left corner. Celebrations were noted as “exuberant” (J. Parsley 2025).
- Izzy: 1 goal from open play, some call it thievery, some call it making sure the ball goes into the goal. (NB: the participant was awarded joint lemon for her efforts)
- CJ: 1 goal from a short corner, some back to the injector magic with a flick over the keeper
- Charlotte: 1 goal from open play, stunning show of skill and calmness, demonstrated by a flick over a grounded keeper
Defensively, we conceded 0 goals, which is the ideal number according to most scientists and all coaches. It is worth noting the final 5 minutes of the experiment were comprised of several defensive short corners back-to-back. Exceptional defending allowed the side to keep a clean sheet.
Discussion and Conclusion
It is this author’s belief that the multifactorial matchday was implemented with great success. All participants appeared to enjoy the experiment. The opposition were noted as “pleasant”, which was welcomed after an “agricultural” outing the week before. The author would also like to apologise for potentially sending an oppo team member to A&E with a (?) broken finger.
