A Hard-Fought Battle
Anna WithingtonWe knew going into this one it would be a tough contest, but our team continues to grow in strength and confidence with every game.
Ely came out strong from the first whistle, putting us under early pressure. Our defence had to dig deep, and we rose to the challenge. While we occasionally lost our shape under pressure, we showed real promise across the pitch - with quick, determined forwards, a tireless midfield, and a defence that refused to back down. Lydia made some outstanding saves to keep us in the game, and Player of the Match Martha delivered fearless tackles that lifted the whole team.
At half-time, the score was 0–0 and spirits were high. We were feeling the effort, but we stayed positive. Our focus for the second half was on maintaining shape and improving distribution - especially through better first touches to set up quality passes.
The second half was a real test. Ely kept the pressure on, and our defence had to weather wave after wave of attack. We found it difficult to break through their press, but when we did, we created some exciting attacking moments. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite convert them into goals.
Their breakthrough came from a short corner, with the ball eventually finding its way through a crowded D and being nudged in. It felt like a tough blow, especially after all the chances we’d defended, but credit to Ely for making one count.
Despite the result, South showed real fight and plenty of positives. We took the game to Ely, especially through the middle, and our attacking intent was clear. We should be proud of how far we’ve come this season. The next step is to build more deliberate connections - balancing our play, improving our passing, and sharpening our off-ball movement to create space.
We’ve got a fantastic mix of emerging talent and experienced heads, and we’re heading in the right direction. Most importantly, we’re improving - and we’re enjoying the journey.
