M1 4-2 Broxbourne Mens 1
Eric WongIn a must win game to keep our survival hope in prem, South needed to pull out their best performance. We began the day by watching the M3s' inspiring come back from 2-0 down to win 4-2, followed by L1s' dominant 7-2 win. Clearly inspired by victories in other fronts, the team was ready to create our own.
South started off really strong in the first quarter, getting the lead through Harry's impeccable back space strike. However, Broxbourne stroke back in the 2nd quarter by scoring 2 quick goals. We also have our ROBERT O’Connor (whoever this is according to East Hockey website) sent off for a wild strike towards goal that almost killed half the players on the pitch, which earned him his first lemon since joining South.
Unlike previous games, however, we kept our composure and patience. We did not get any more cards, stayed strong and kept our belief that we can turn this over. In particular, Ed, as has been the case this season, was mopping up at the back clearing all the advances Broxbourne tried to create. Broxbourne failed to break through.
Fourth quarter will prove to be the finest hour of our man. We regained all lost ground from Tim's strike right at the start of the quarter. Knowing that a draw will not be a satisfactory result and our visitor's morale plummeted, we immediately initiated a counter attack and it did not take long to break through. We broke their defences in the right flank with our fierce attack and found Harry, our man of the match, in the heart of Broxbourne's territory, who scored his second to give us the lead again. Broxbourne regrouped and began to fight back in attempt to claw back the deficit but our now very inspired man will not give up any inch of ground without a fight. With 2 minutes to go, Willo stole the ball from their best player and found Elk in the D who calmly lobbed the keeper burrying Broxbourne any hope of finding an equaliser.
Finally scoring our first victory, the team is now ready to carry this momentum to bring horror to the Ipswich man. Stu Rimmer, a famous scholar in the study of CSHC, predicts that this will be the beginning of South's big promotion push.
