M2 0-0 St Ives Mens 1
Alexander HaglundSouth M2s 0–0 St Ives: Nil-Nil, All Action
Away at St Ives on a grey but dry day, South M2s dug deep against the team sitting second in the league. It was a tight, even game that genuinely could have gone either way.
With Captain Jim absent for unknown reasons, Andy “vice-dad” Wadell took the armband on his 100th game for the club, setting us up in a disciplined 65% press. Both halves were fairly balanced, with St Ives having spells of pressure, especially after the break.
Our backline of Alex “Haggers”, Oli, and Ali had a strong performance, dealing with a barrage of St Ives short corners, while John and Jack held the screen positions strongly in front of them. Behind them, George made several excellent saves from both corners and open play to keep the clean sheet intact, earning himself a fully deserved Man of the Match.
Going forward, we still carried a threat. Charlie and Gabe both came close to nicking a winner, and a couple of strong drives from Ash, Will, and Oli L. also threatened to break the deadlock but ultimately fell just short. Frustratingly, we had no short corners for the first time this season.
Discipline was mostly solid, with one notable exception: Haggers picked up a green card and two minutes off for a shove on an opposition player, and an earlier deflated aerial helped secure him lemon.
We welcomed Jack back from his spell with the 1s — he had clearly missed playing with us — and had valuable support from Jacko from the 1s. Gabe and Chris also get a shoutout for a strong 2s debut. Post-match approval came from the missing skipper himself, with Captain Jim dropping a very happy “Clean sheet. Nice one!” in the chat.
Full-time:
"St Ives " 0"-" 0" South M2s"
A well-earned point away to strong opposition, a solid team display, Man of the Match George starring in goal, strong 2s debuts for Gabe and Chris, and vice-dad hitting his century — rounded off with pretty good lasagna at teas. Goalless – but we’ll take the point happily.
