M1 3-5 Cambridge City Mens 1
Stanley HansonAnother grey Saturday, another late pushback for the M1s. Thankfully we were 'away' at Wilberforce Road, and the late pb meant that most other Cambridge South matches had finished - we were fortunate to have plenty of support on the sidelines for our fixture against Cambridge City 1s.
Will was right to remind us in the poky changies before the match; we're the underdogs. 2 years ago, to suggest that South's M1s could share a league with City's M1s, you'd be laughed at. But here we are!
Out the gate we played like a very different side to the one that ended last Saturday's match against Cambridge Uni. Embracing our underdog status, we were chasing the tails of City, ignoring our relative size or legacy; throughout the match we effectively condensed the pitch and gave them very little to work with.
Nevertheless, City maintained possession for a long spell in the first quarter, and after lots of pressure around our D they found a pass to someone free at the back post. 1-0 City.
A big change from recent weeks, we were actually upgrading in their D and getting short corners! George cashed in from one early on and went 1-1.
So effective was our press that City began throwing dubious aerials to beat it. Luck favoured one of their attacks, where two aerials were sent consecutively towards our D; an unfortunate touch handed their forward a shot at goal, which was put away cleanly. Just a few minutes later, one of City's young forwards took things into his own hands and dribbled smartly through us, and found yet another back post pass which was converted. 3-1, all pretty much in the first quarter!
Another change this week was the umpiring. We have felt a little unlucky at times this season with some decisions, but this week it was the opposition who were clearly getting frustrated (and ended up with a yellow at the end of the game for their complaints). Another South short corner, and this time Teddy found the net!
All this by the 21st minute, according to the score sheet. And South kept bringing the danger; a few near ises were lamented and considered thoroughly as contenders for LOM. It was honestly brilliant to see the team connecting so fluidly. It took another 20 minutes, but South again converted a short corner! It was 3-3, and all to play for...
For 3 minutes! South had a long spell of sustained possession and had been squeezing city into their own D. A misplaced pass gave their forwards a 2v1 which snuck under my pads. Suffer with me when I tell you I felt the ball as it snuck under me, a small fraction of a second quicker and things would have gone so differently. 5 minutes later after a driving run down our left, a square ball found back post yet again and City doubled their lead with 20 minutes still to play.
But, critically, South responded with admirable performance to seek another equaliser. Hunger to win is there every week, but we have perhaps been guilty of letting heads drop this season when things don't quite click. The same could not be said this match. Pressure was sustained right to the end, the ball moving quickly and with purpose as we earned a couple more short corners that missee the target by a whisper.
We didn't find the net again, but South M1s kept their heads up and brushed off the scoreline. We truly felt we had a game on our hands throughout and never relented. Across a dififcult season like this, scorelines often have not reflected the story of the match; this is certainly one of those games that could have concluded very differently. This was one to be proud of.
