Fully kitted

Gabe Wolff

After last week’s loss, some had hoped that we would come back better and stronger than last week. This week the M3s took a step in the right direction, and although the result was a hard-fought but disappointing draw, it can only mean that the M3s are soon to be on an amazing winning streak (hopefully).

The first half of the game saw the M3s playing efficiently and making lots of space and having lots of goal scoring opportunities. On his M3s debut, Ivo broke the silence with a textbook goal passing around the keeper with Ollie.

After about the 10th short corner, Anns decided it was time to burn a hole in the back of the net with a clinical finish. The M3s were 2-0 up and by courtesy of many important saves by Ben L this scoreline was maintained up to half time.

Whilst the M3s had played well in the first, the second half was a different story. The M3s lost their flow and managed to concede 2 goals, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Some say that it was the M3s’ lack of structure, some say it was poor passing, but many said that the underlying problem was clearly organisation. One player, however, had no issues with organisation whatsoever: Gabe W. With expert bag-packing skills, he ensured to bring all his equipment to the M3s game. To prevent future chaos, he wrote a checklist for next week assigning a piece of equipment to each member of the team in a super-engaging equipment-style comparison to please Riccardo.

Ben Lye- Hand warmers: Ben keeps his hands warm with a slightly more exciting alternative. For most of the game, there was no time for hand warmers as Ben was busy making great saves. He may want to pack them in his bag just in case though.

Danny McCree- Short corner helmet: Like a short corner helmet, Danny is a hard-headed defender. If he wasn’t keeping the team safe and absorbing the impact of attackers, he was launching the ball down the line and making great attacking plays.

Alex Pashley- Shoes: Some say that Pash can run up and down the line infinitely- on Saturday he certainly tried. He loved using his shoes so much that he even decided to secretly kick the ball with only myself noticing in the second half. Nevertheless, he did an amazing job running up and down the wing and making crucial tackles.

Tom Anns - Towel: When Tom A is not beckoning the rest of his team to shower with him, his performance is akin to a towel. On Saturday, he soaked up the attacks of the opposition and dried up all doubt that he wasn’t able to score an awesome goal.

Douglas Gibson – Glove: Like a trusty glove, Douglas kept the team safe and protected. He prevented danger and comfortably transferred the ball around the back, setting the team up for counter attacks.

James Menzies-Bottle of water: Menzies was fluid and clean in the midfield, he kept the team going and was simply refreshing to play with.

Shin Kim- Shin pads: No comment. True to his name, shin never wears shin pads and this week was no exception- he still managed to have a great game even without safety equipment!

Seb Dias-Whiteboard: Taking on the role of an active whiteboard, the partly injured captain offered strategic advice and implemented it in impressive fashion on the pitch.

Gabe Wolff- Tracksuit bottoms? : Every seasoned Hockey player knows that tracksuit bottoms are essential for both functionality and style. When given the option of shorts or tracksuit bottoms for a game, one should always forget their shorts and be forced to wear tracksuit bottoms to ensure a solid performance as demonstrated by Gabe.

Matt Langley- Foam roller: If he’s not ill or hampered by his hamstring, Matt is like a foam roller as he kept the game seamlessly rolling through the midfield. On Saturday, he fixed all the little problems in midfield.

Jamie Coltman- Goggles: Jamie can either play blind, wearing glasses or a potential new alternative: with goggles. Although he hasn't yet worn any goggles, his passing is still sharp and he has 2020 vision for scoring goals, even if he didn’t quite manage to score this week.

Jack Chalk- Travel sickness tablets: Travel sickness tablets are a necessity for Jack- whether it is making it to away games or in the case of this week, fuelling his motion-sickness inducing spin move. Jack clearly had a whole packet; he was able to spin the M3s into countless short corners.

Riccardo Nori- Box of plasters: Riccardo played amazingly well on Saturday... for five minutes. After a dramatic short corner and a hockey stick to the face, Riccardo was left with a ‘battle scar’ that a box of plasters could have arguably fixed. Denying the captain’s orders to keep playing, Riccardo rushed off to A&E and conveniently made it back to the game for pizza. Hopefully he’ll be fully healed and ready to deliver an amazing performance next week.

Ivo Bottomley- Brand new stick: On his debut, like using a brand new stick, Ivo certainly impressed the team. This new stick is amazing at scoring, particularly on reverse, and will certainly see more use in games. The only difficulty this top-quality stick had on Saturday, was when it lost its footing in maybe the greatest goal scoring position of all time.

Ollie Lamming- A Ball: Ollie is a well-rounded and solid player. He made many great plays up front and was flying and bouncing around the other team. He even assisted rolling said ball over the goal line.
