Match report
Noah BrownThe Cambridge South Men’s 6s took to the pitch on a grey, overcast Saturday against a youthful and spirited Ely Men’s 4s side. Despite dominating possession for much of the match, South found themselves two goals down before half-time, both unfortunate efforts as Ely twice caught them out, once on the break and again while trying to play it out from the back. Ryan in goal could do little about either, though he handled everything else that came his way with calm assurance.
Tom was on fire down the left wing, linking up impressively with Luke and causing chaos in the Ely defence. Noah mirrored that energy on the right, working round the back to carve open space and set up John Greaves for several near chances. Ely’s talented younger players, numbers 90 and 91, gave South a few headaches, but Cameron and Fraser dug in heroically, with Luke hassling the opposition into visible frustration at one stage as he threw his stick.
The second half saw South pushing harder, their wingers bursting past defenders and forcing the play. Even on a sluggish, slippery pitch that had several players hitting the deck, they kept driving forward. Noah and Parsley combined beautifully on one sweeping move, then moments later a slick exchange. Luke, Jelley, Tom, back to Jelley, on to Rob — ended with a blistering shot well saved. The tide was turning.
Persistence paid off as South finally broke through. From a short corner, John fired the ball out to Wilco, who slipped it to Noah to test the keeper. The rebound fell kindly, and Tom buried it. At 2–1, momentum was with South. More clever interchanges followed — Noah down the wing to Rob, a scramble in the D, another short corner. Rob’s strike and Tom’s follow-up both flashed just wide as the pressure mounted.
In the closing minutes, Ryan pulled off another top save to deny Ely, while Fraser, Ky, and James threw themselves into tackles to keep the scoreline alive. One final push saw Rob bearing down on goal, stick ready to strike, when the final whistle blew. A 2–1 defeat on paper, but a performance full of heart, skill, and promise. It was definitely one where Cambridge South Men’s 6s could rightly feel they deserved at least a share of the spoils.

Adapted to the pitch, like a butcher's dog devouring a salami. Cracking goal too.
