L6 2-1 Pelicans Ladies 3

What a match! Cambridge South L6s took on 4th in the league Pelicans 3s, delivering a spirited performance to secure a memorable victory.

The first half was a closely contested battle, with both sides matching each other across the pitch. Possession and territory shifted back and forth with midfielders Molly, Jess, Penelope and joining POM Sophie hunting down the ball like terriers and distributing it up to the forwards. Ellie and Alice repeatedly threatening the Pelis’ defence but not quite getting it past the goalie. As the halftime whistle blew, the score remained 0–0, reflecting a very even opening period.

The game sprang to life in the second half thanks to an inspired tactical move by coach Chris. Centre back Martha was pushed up the ranks to play at centre forward – a bold decision that paid off in spectacular fashion.

Before long, Martha surged up the pitch with the ball, beating everyone in her path and striking it cleanly from the top of the D straight past the Pelicans goalkeeper to put South 1–0 up. Martha celebrated in disbelief – her debut goal for South and a beautiful one at that!

Pelicans fought back strongly and began piling pressure on the South defence but they struggled to get past joint POM Lottie and fellow defenders Rosie and Poppy who stood their ground until Pelis found a gap and managed to sneak the ball through to equalise at 1–1.

But Martha wasn’t finished yet. With fire in her belly and now knowing exactly what it felt like to score for the mighty Purples, she found herself perfectly placed at the end of a flowing Kitt-Kitt transition in the D and calmly tapped the ball home for her second goal of the match. South were back in front at 2–1.

The crowd began to wonder – could it be a hat-trick? Martha very nearly delivered. Another quick transition from Astrid to birthday girl Elodie who sent the ball racing up the pitch to Martha once again, and she came agonisingly close to sealing her third. The chance narrowly slipped away, prompting a dramatic tumble onto the turf as Martha berated both herself and her stick in frustration – a moment that sealed her LOM title.

At the other end, South’s defence stood firm. Some nice picks from Niamh who distributed well sending the ball back into midfield. The defence continued to calmly clear the ball each time it entered our D, with Wei every ready to kick the ball away in goal. Their composure under pressure ensured South held onto their lead as the clock ticked down.

In a final moment of tension, the whistle blew just as Pelicans entered the D for one last attack, bringing the match to an end. The South L6s celebrated another fine win, built on determination, teamwork, and a memorable two-goal performance from their unlikely striker.
