Not enough leisure to avoid lop-sidedness
Rob BartonAs Pascal (not Twain) might have said:
"Je n'ai fait cette équipe plus forte que parce que je n'ai pas eu le loisir de la faire plus faible."
You know it's one of those weeks when you finally hit the pillow on Friday thinking: "We did it, even a last-minute sub, South is great, let's hope nobody gets injured at P&P". Right now to sort the drivers...
Saturday morning, two down, we go with ten.
Nevertheless utter determination to get the team out staved off exceptionally poor availability again this week. Just about. Come on Cambridge South ... let's be 'avin' you.
Big thanks to those who doubled to make the match happen, to the higher captains whose support genuinely made all the difference, and to Bourne Deeping for their understanding that options for selection were highly constrained this week.
The scoreline may have been lop-sided but the match itself was more even that the record will persist. This wasn't an hour of attack versus defence. It was more that South were able to restrict access to our D and overload the opposition's.
A first half hat-trick from Craig meant he was moved to wing-back and then CB second half. He's got two modes: hockey on; hockey off, really this one needed a nuanced hockey controlled. Craig finished the half with a well-taken fourth. There were some misplaced shorts and shots alongside one or two comedy open goal moments in there too.
It was time for a rejig at the break, a reminder of the spirit, a refocus on the "pass pass pass" mentality and a call for composure on the ball. The second half showed we can respect these principles and once that started to happen the floodgates opened.
Three more from Rob, Henry finished off the best passing movement but the moment for me was Cameron stepping up and accepting the challenge for a junior to take our PS before dispatching with confidence. The cherry on top of another MoM performance today.
The team hope the Bourne Deeping player who got injured (head and hand) is now OK. Rob also hopes, and expects, a more typical M6s selection will be available for the return.
