You are the champions, my “friends”, but we’ll keep on fighting till the end!

Waiting for the “Hammer To Fall”:

The L4s arrived to a very sunny start, which promptly turned to rain as the match commenced against Wisbech 2s (who were second in the league at the fixture commencement). Maybe this was foreshadowing, for we knew this would be a tough game and that this was likely to be the end of our 5 game unbeaten run, however we did not let that stop our “Killer Queen” attitudes and we came out fighting.

“Under Pressure”:

The whizzers came out of the blocks with a mercurial attitude but some strong attack and put pressure on us immediately. We held them off until 13mins in when they scored their first goal. We then did rinse and repeat and held them off for another 13 mins (seemingly unlucky for some) when they scored their second!

“Don’t Stop Me Now”:

That’s when we decided that enough was enough and we were not going to let them advance on us. We started to close them down and stop them in their tracks consistently (this was fully embodied by our POM Martha who let nothing past her and distributed excellently).

“I Want To Break Free”:

We rounded out the first half with no more goals and we then started applying our own pressure! We closed them off on their attacks and advanced up the pitch with some lovely intercepts and drives, whilst maintaining our possession by utilising our high transfers well. This continued deep into the second half.

“We Will Rock You”:

They got scared! We were attacking them fairly continuously for a large amount of the second half and then whoo, we got a short corner.

Unfortunately this didn’t get converted and moreover, whizzers whizzed past us, caught us on the break and…

Dun Dun Dun “Another One Bites The Dust":

Alas they scored minutes before the final whistle, and then in fairly quick succession, scored again (a fairly heavily contested goal, where the striker appeared to be outside the D when the ball was struck and no attacking player then touched the ball before it went in the goal, but the goal stood after some debate).

“Play The Game”:

Wisbech, despite being 4-0 up then decided to (continue) shouting quite loudly about calls that didn’t go their way, but got told firmly get on with it and play the game…especially because the calls were fine!

“The Show Must Go On”:

Final whistle. Onwards and upwards and even if we didn’t win, we played some great hockey, really closed them down after the first quarter and I think we had a nicer time on the pitch. Well played team!

Admitting to a short corner when it hadn’t yet been given! Very noble!
