Men's 2nds end the year with another great win.

An attractive attacking game from both sides ended in a 4-2 victory for the 2's.

South created numerous chances in the first half, with their superior pace and passing in midfield exploiting the spaces left by the Ely side. We opened the scoring after a penetrating run down the left from Rich C, whose cross was converted at the second/third attempt by Rob, cooly lifting the ball over the stricken keeper on his reverse side from close range. It stayed at 1-0 for a good portion of the half, until South's second gave them some breathing space. This author can't remember much about the second goal - somehow the ball arrived at Tris and his flick was lucky to squeeze through the keeper's legs at 'groin' height (who may have wished he was wearing/needed a bigger box...). Ely were fairly dangerous on the attack, with some promising youngsters down their right-hand side, and pulled one back to make it 2-1 via a short corner - a crisp strike along the ground to Shahbaz's left. However, the home team's leading margin was restored just before half time, and this time a truly memorable effort. Tris took the ball into the D and despite ending up on his reverse side produced a stunning reverse-stick strike that flew past their bemused keeper high into the net. 3-1 at the break.

After an inspired half-time team-talk from vice-captain Sanjay (they get better every week...), the second half progressed in a similar vein to the first. The visitors produced some decent attacking moves to force Shahbaz into action on several occasions, including several superb saves from short corners. South created some great openings themselves however, and eventually put the result beyond doubt when a nice through ball (from Tris?) was finished with a reverse sweep from 'desperate-for-a-game' Graham to complete the scoring for the home team. A consolation goal from another short corner wasn't enough for Ely. 4-2 the final result.

So the 2's go marching on, with their 3rd win on the bounce sending them into 4th place and eyeing the promotion spots. A strong second half of the season could end in glory.

(scraped it by one vote), honourable mentions to Mariano for some sterling defensive work and Tom W's energy and passing in midfield
