Despite scoring 3 goals, the Men's 1sts lose to Saffron Walden 2
The first run-out for the M1s after last week's debacle of a cancelled game at the top of the club. A close-fought match and at the end of the game both teams had scored 3 goals. Unfortunately all of South's were scored in our own net and so it was Walden who walked off with a 6-0 rout.
This may sound a little odd but I would say that the teams were actually fairly well matched. We had our moments and shouldn't be too depressed but Walden were just sharper to the ball and more cohesive in their passing and moving. They scored 1 goal pretty much in the first minute whilst we were still admiring the St John's pitch and then in a display of bad-sportsmanship they kept playing right up to half time and got a couple more when we had decided that 25 minutes was quite enough for a first half back after the summer break.
The second half was an even contest but we never really generated a cutting edge in attack and then in the last 5 minutes made some howling errors in defence to let them run in a handful of late goals.
On the plus side, Parker scored his first goal for the club. On the negative side we paid £50 for some nachos and sandwiches.
Chris Pearson
Probably well-merited but I can't really remember him doing anything. At least he didn't spend most of the game lying on the floor like Laurie did.
