Storming Win

Mark Williams

South registered their biggest win of the season at home against Wisbech with a relentless performance marred only by two moments of madness, one in either half.

South have got into an excellent habit of starting at pace and trying to assert their dominance on the game from the first whistle. This week they were richly rewarded with two goals in the opening few minutes, the first for Chalk whose smart shot came at the end of a decent move. The second came from a swiftly taken free hit deflected in brilliantly by McCulloch, whose one-touch finishes have taken him to the top of the club's goal scoring chart already!

Two up and in control, South then had a moment of collective retardation immediately after the restart that gifted Wisbech a free route back into the game (Ed. - I say collective, I really mean Aston and Troll!).

That slip-up gave Wisbech a psychological boost and although South responded well there was a definite shift in momentum and it took time and significant effort to wrestle authority back. The third goal was crucial and fortunately it went the way of the home side. Chalk was mounted roughly from behind by the keeper and Parsot calmly crashed in the short corner at the second attempt. Pearson added a fourth just before half time after an excellent fast break that took South from their own 23 (or 25, whatever that line is). McCulloch put it on a plate for Pearson, who had turned up late due to a tractor breakdown back on the farm. A goal won't fix everything but it did make him smile briefly.

Captain Alonso was delighted at half time and waxed lyrical about how his fantastic selection and formation decisions have reinvented the team's performance. Williams rebalanced the mood by moaning for ages about the goal we had conceded!

The second half saw a very consistent defensive performance with Troll, Virdi and Rosselli making sure Mann had very little to do during his return to the 1st team. This solid foundation allowed Spencer, Alonso and Pawson, amongst others, the freedom to take their men on and use space to open up the Wisbech midfield and defence. Pearson slapped in his second for the game after a scruffy exchange in the Wisbech D and Chalk deflected in South's final goal with a deft touch. Chalk had earlier scored with a brilliant back heel - despite trying to claim it, the ruse was foiled by his happy, smiling face. As everyone knows, Jack's real celebration face is an aggressive scowl!!!

Wisbech put up a very decent test throughout the game and the scoreline reflects only the effort and application South showed throughout the match rather than the quality of the opposition. If this hunger for goals can be maintained, coupled with the pace and willingness to work hard for one another throughout the team there will be even better scorelines to come.

COTS!!

N.B. The second half moment of madness mentioned above was a bizarre incident in which the whole team, presumably high as kites on the adrenaline from the game, had a collective moment of psychosis in which contact with reality was lost. It appeared that Dave Aston strode forward from left back starting a move that ended with him launching a thunderous shot against the keeper's pads, picking up the rebound and dispatching the ball into the goal with a vicious reverse stick shot!! Logic dictates that as this was a well above average goal, it simply can't have happened. If it had happened South would have won 7-1, but we're very happy with just the 6!

Hospital pass to Troll, awful celebration, Helen isn't the only person he makes feel sick!
