Another Week and Another Win
Jamie InshawStatistics would imply that South were due to slip up this week, supposedly without a win at St Ives for three years. However, everyone prepared for the match in the best manner possible and turned up tuned in and raring to go (thanks particularly to Pearson, Tom and Jason for their efforts in this regard).
As Dave Aston bragged about setting his 800m P.B. at the venue (2 Minutes 13 seconds), Chris Graveling and Jim submitted their Lemon votes nice and early: Chris for a run in with the athletics track fence, and Jim for an uncomfortably underprepared pre-match team talk.
The pitch took some adjusting to and South started slowly. St Ives won a short corner and struck with the opener, with Jason confused as to which of the three balls seemingly hurtling towards him he should stop.
This kicked South into action and after a great high press, Pearson nicked the ball off the opposition centre back and slipped a pass to Craig Spencer, who couldn't miss. 1-1.
Craig nearly doubled his tally seconds later, when he struck the post after some more good high pressing. Local celebrity Mark was on hand to slot home the rebound and South had their noses in front.
Apart from a thirty second spell of diving-in and stick tackling (to the point where the umpires rightly had a word), our defence was rarely threatened in the half, with a solid performance from Colin who again resisted the urge to throw any aerials.
A wonderful run by Mike Karran and a lovely ball across to the far post to summer signing, Inshaw, saw South go 3-1 ahead. Much was made of the finish, some calling it audacious, others a bit risky. After the game Inshaw clarified that he was, "Just doing his job."
The second half was much improved, South applying pressure from the word go. Soon that pressure told, and after a slick counterattack, Craig fully committed himself to a diving finish, increasing the lead further and probably putting the result beyond doubt.
There was time for Mark to steal Pearson's goal from a short corner (was it going in?) and for us to concede a sloppy (but deserved) goal before playing keep-ball for the remaining few minutes and walking away with the three points.
Well played everyone.
Chris Graveling
Sadly a wardrobe malfunction cost him dearly in the Lemon votes regardless of Jim's poor planning or Pearson's night-time antics.
