A Day at Letchworth Beach

South were looking optimistic going into the game this weekend. Playing bottom of the league Letchworth, South were feeling confident of finally getting three points in the bag and their first win of the season.

A quick weather report from Colin announced sun, heat and more sun. Flip-flops were the main clothing attire coming into the match, as Joel’s dream of a beach day came true when the realisation South were going to be playing on Letchworth’s beach resort they call their home pitch.

After motivational music from DJ Joel and support from the locals in the warm up, South start the game strong. A couple of silky skills down the wing from Shin found Harry Lewis with the ball at the top of the D. He had space, he had time, and a clear shot on goal, but all Harry could think about was the frustration of having to change out of his flip-flops even though all he could see around him was sand. Out of spite Harry lashed out onto the sand, producing an epic crater caused by the a swing and a miss thundering into the ground. The earth stood still, players around him stood still, but the umpire understood Harry’s frustration and allowed him to take one more swing at the ball, firing it into the bottom corner. One-nil to South.

Letchworth were confused and puzzled by the decision, allowing South to press and contain Letchworth in their own half. Coach Paul’s favourite word, “Retention”, was echoing through South’s ears and a collection of routine simple passes allowed Jon Mann to dart around the defence and drill it across the defence for Harry Lewis to clip on to the end of it, scoring his second goal of the day. Harry’s confidence was high and he was eager to show Shin how to score goals in training next week.

Letchworth finally woke up and, even with the mighty Jason in goal producing some spectacular saves, Letchworth managed to scrape a goal back. However, they thought they’d make it more difficult for themselves by going down to nine men, through a green and a yellow card.

The final few minutes of the game were frantic, South’s defence stopping every attack coming their way. When the final whistle went, jubilant celebrations started in the Cambridge dugout. South had won their first game of the season.

M.O.M: Harry Lewis for scoring the goals (plus giving us an extra five minute break while hobbling off the pitch with a knee injury).
Lemon: Jim for deciding to dribble his way out of South’s D in the final few minutes of the game.
Song of the day: All I Do is Win by DJ Khaled.
