Three Cheers for Someone Else
Stu RimmerGame 2 of the season arrived; a bright sunny day in Cambridge. Aston had been practising his after-match jokes all week, Shin was predictably running late but not as much as Pearson, who realised that the sundial in his tractor was set to another time zone.
An organised-looking opposition were at Long Road early (more about them to come) and started the game brightly, asserting some early pressure. A few meaty tackles came into the game, one earning Joel a two minute rest, and during a brief injury break South came together to get our heads in the game. As the game opened up, Tom K and Mike K started to boss the midfield and work our possession high up the pitch. We won a short corner and as the ball slipped under the visiting keeper's pads, Mike was on hand to slam home: one-nil. More of the same as South continued to press and picked up two more goals before halftime, I forget who by (Pearson with a one-handed reverse sweep and Joel I think). I was already planning my end of game speech.
As the crowd took on pitch-side refreshments (@Neil S and the committee - people are asking for a coffee machine, perhaps hooked up on the side of the shed…?), our halftime message was clear: use the space, keep the intensity up and more goals will come. The team responded well in the first minute after the break as Tom K weaved through midfield. A well-timed pass was delivered to Harry Lewis who tapped in from a yard out at the front post.
A second goal for Harry and another later on for Jim put six on the scoreboard for South, as well as one for the visitors from a short corner routine mid-way through the half. Further pressure towards the end of the game saw a series of short corners won by Mike and Stu, with the full time whistle going just after the last one was awarded. A good save came from their keeper and the full time whistle blew. Captain Stu, never having been so high up the pitch, lost all cognition and lead a strong three cheers for 'Wisbech', rightly receiving some strong remarks from the opposition and confused faces from his team mates who wondered if the game had just been re-located to near Lincolnshire (did you know Wisbech is only five miles south of that fine county?) For any newcomers, this is a good definition of a lemon.
Overall, another controlled and strong performance from South who go top of the league on goal difference, and look forward to next week away at St Ives (I've checked).
