Less Press!

Sam H

I sniff the air, able to detect a familiar scent, a scent that all week I long for, a scent that makes me feel at home, comforted and safe. Tiger Balm (unofficial sponsors of Cambridge South M1s), and that can only mean one thing; it’s game day!

A long drive through unchartered fenland, uncomfortably squished into the back of Bailey’s white Fiat 500, would take us to the glorious Wisbech. On the way great discussion was led by our illustrious leader, Harry Chalk; the main topic, effective communication. “Three-quarter” deemed too difficult to say and be processed by some of the finest hockey brains in Cambridge; our leader required something shorter, easier, less complex to announce, to call this alternative press. Suggestions of “retreat”, “fall back” and “less press” were all in the mix, before deciding “three-quarter” isn’t all too bad.

N.B. Prior to the start of the game both Harry Chalk and Dave Aston promised they would each score two goals.

Before long, the game began, of which there were few moments of note:

  1. Harry Chalk missed a one-on-one.
  2. Pearson whinged about the pitch and how easy it’d be to clean.
  3. Joel gave the same pep talk he gives every week.
  4. Herb dived again, but kept his shoes on all game.
  5. Wisbech scored.
  6. Dave was practically non-existent.
  7. Bailey missed a p-flick.
  8. Dean scored despite Herb’s best defending.
  9. Owen missed a sitter (but, “It’s okay because James and Chalky missed worse or more.”)
  10. Wisbech scored.
  11. Chalky called, “Let’s press”; the team heard, “Less press.”
  12. Highfield heroically equalised.
  13. Chalky missed again at the end.

A point salvaged in the dying minutes is nothing to quickly dismiss. A well-fought game. South enjoyed Wisbech’s surprising bluebell-scented steam room after the game before the long, squished journey back in James’ Fiat.

Has a man ever sprinted so far with his hand touching the ground? Great goal to cap off a fine performance
