The Fives got off to a strong start against an aggressive Wisbech, with birthday girl Nicky pushing the side straight towards the opposition’s D. The formidable forwards were able to keep possession in the attacking half, with some excellent passes between Olivia and Claudia. A few full-on tackles from the opposition drew play back down the pitch, where they were greeted by Serin’s wall of defence. Supported by Hannah P and Elly, Serin made some excellent intercepts to clear the ball through the opposition’s attacking line, where captain Nicole’s midfield diamond of birthday girl Fi, Polly, Laura and herself were waiting.

The first round of subs brought some fresh legs to the pitch in the form of Sarah R, Sarah H, Phil and Hannah M, and the Fives were looking to attack again but unfortunately they were drawn back into defence. Loopy, who was goalkeeping for at least her second match of the day, made some brilliant saves but Wisbech caught a lucky break and got one past the goal line. After being denied a short corner, Wisbech managed to increase their lead with another successful shot at the goal.

The second half saw the Fives come back on with a renewed sense of determination. The midfield diamonds were able to keep the opponents spread out and channel the ball towards the attacking D. The Five’s well-aimed shots could get past the opposition’s goal keeper, and sadly the opposition managed to sneak one more goal.

Woman of the match was awarded to Serin, for her excellent return to hockey and some blinding intercepts on the defence line. Mentions also go to Hannah M, for a well-played first ever game, Nicole for covering the most distance, and Nicky and Fi for celebrating their birthdays by playing for the Fives. Lemon of the Match went to Elly, for sending the ball into her own face. Citrusy mentions go to Polly for cheerily passing a sideline to the opposition, and Phil for forgetting to get dressed in time for the match.
