Let the Goal Rush Continue
Abi JewkesLabelled the biggest game of the season so far, there were some nerves from South coming into this game. Saffron Walden were standing second in the table and our closest competition for the top spot.
A strong team talk from the El Capitano, Robyn, ensured the team were fired up and ready to go.
Initially the pressure of the occasion may have taken hold as South struggled to convert their many attacks into goals. They remained patient and Carly’s first touch of the game become the first goal of the match!
Now that South had “broken the seal” the goals came rolling in. Some great link-up play between Alice and Sarah saw Sarah scoring one goal then followed by another from a short corner. A hat-trick nearly occurred when Sarah had a one-on-one with the keeper. She took inspiration from our great captain’s words and wellied it up in the air towards the back netting. The cries of effort could be heard from the side lines and possibly Addenbrookes, but unfortunately it cruised over the cross bar.
Laura also took another two. Described by some as cricket goals but still one of my personal favourites was Laura’s incredible reverse stick deflection mid-air.
Saffron Walden did put up some strong counter-attacks but the South defence were impenetrable. Fantastic tackles and work rate from the back four (the two Robyns, Maddie, Amalia and Hannah) maintained South with a clean sheet.
And like it was meant to be, the final goal came from Carly’s final touch of the match.
MoM: went to Katie G for some awesome attacking play and racking up the assists. Honorary mentions to Abi, Robyn Murray, Robyn McLean and Laura, who also received votes.
LOM: went to Abi who, despite the six-nil score line, still felt it was necessary to take out one of the opposition with a flying stick.
And a special shout out to Alice who played the match despite twisting her ankle in the warm-up. And for any doubters out there trust me, it was real, we have seen the colourful after photos.
Another great result for South Ladies’ 1s in their bid for promotion!
Katie Gibson
