South So Close
Rhi DaviesSouth ferried themselves off to Newmarket this weekend for one of their biggest matches of the season. The girls were in positive spirits as the first whistle went with a South pushback. South had the first attempt on goal with a breakaway from Jas on the wing. Sadly, nothing came from this attack but it gave the team motivation that this was a game that they could be theirs. With the game very evenly match the ball was skilfully moved by both teams up and down the pitch; fitness being put to the test. Newmarket’s first short corner was prosperous for them and provided the game with its first goal.
The first half continued with Newmarket continuing to attack, but some great tackles from Laurie and Phoebe eliminated players from entering the D, where Janette was ready for them if they did get past. Newmarket were awarded another short corner and with that came their second goal: two-nil.
With half time approaching South began to develop some strong attacking play. From a long hit from Rhi to Zara on the wing the ball entered the opposition’s D; Jess shot, Jess scored - two-one. Newmarket gained their third goal just as the half time whistle went.
Some very red-faced South players huddled in for a coach’s half time chat from James and the skipper, and refuelled themselves with Haribo.
The second half was a similarly tough battle, the ball being moved fast around the pitch. With South continuing to battle and fight in every tackle, they began to show why they are fight for promotion. Following another ball brought down the pitch through the midfield, Jess was fed a ball: round the keeper but unfortunately then hit the post. However, this attack gave the forward the hunger for a goal and with a deflection on the line South were awarded their second goal through Erin.
In the last few minutes South had their final break which lead to a short corner and the final whistle. Nothing came for South, regrettably, and the game was finished two-three.
Honourable mentions go to Julie for her solid defending, Jas for her consistent driving and great runs and Rhi who once again put her body on the line for the game, but the Player of the Match went to Kirsty, who played her socks of in every different position she was played. Lousie also had a very good game and helped to sop the opposition’s scoreline from growing outside of their short corner routines. Lemon was a much clearer winner this week. Although Janette gave it a go with a ‘school girl’ scream when falling over in the D, Erin’s parking escapades won her LoM for the second week in a row.
