Total Team Performance

Rhi Davies

South ventured to Ely this week, ready for a tough match against a team that had really pushed the girls last time. On arrival the changing space was cramped with South being put in the small end of the changing room. It was a quick get ready and out on to the pitch…once Ely could unlock it.

Warm-up finished and team talk swiftly completed, the whistle went to start the game. The very sandy pitch made South do a lot of hard passing. Ely knew the pitch and had some very strong hitting players in the middle, which South became accustomed to throughout the game. However from some strong play through the mids and bouncing balls, Zara popped our first goal of the game in. One-nil!

South continued to attack and with a quickly taken free hit Rhi slapped the ball into the D where Zara stood to slip the second of her goals into the Ely nets: two-nil!

Several short corners followed with Anna getting her first of the game from a deflection off the keeper past after Rhi’s straight strike. Three-nil. Kat played strong along the wing and with a great pass, Anna was ready on the P-spot to get South’s fourth.

Tuffers turn now for some goals. After narrowly missing her first sliding goal, she made sure that her second made it to the back of the goal. Great dedication from the striker: five-nil. Just before half time South got another short. A wonderful strike from Tuffers into the bottom corner, and the girls huddled into the goal now at six-nil.

A great half left little for the skipper to say except keep playing the way we are and get some more goals, and that’s exactly what the girls did!

Quickly into the second half the girls got a short corner and with Lucy V on the post, she was ready to put the ball through the keeper legs. Seven-nil.

Ely presented some more attacking play in the second half but the defensive back line stayed strong. With Nic and Lucy’s hard hitting getting the ball clear, Janette demanding from the back and Olivea and Bella clearing the ball into the wings, it was no surprise South kept a clean sheet. Cassie made a wonderful save and gave South another clean sheet week.

The final goals came from Anna, with a bouncing ball scooped into the top of the net and, after a great break, Anna drew the final defender out to slip the ball left for Tuffer’s to hit into the bottom corner. Nine-nil – a well deserved score for a great team performance.
