Bouncing Back
Phoebe MorganSouth went away to Haverhill and faced a very different team to the one where a record eighteen-nil win had occurred at home before Christmas. After a maze around the gym we finally made it to the pitch and were soon underway. We knew they would have some of their 1s players doubling up but during the first half South had many circle entries, managing a variety of different shots on goal but their keeper was being strong and denying us.
Making my club striker debut (I’m a defender normally, ovs) I manged to slot one inside the right post. One-nil South. I know what you’re thinking: how have I got LoM?! A defender scoring should have been a MoM. With more circle entries but no more goals and a few too-close-for-comfort attempts by Haverhill, captain Rhi found herself in the D throwing her hands up in the air after not getting a short. The side line chat was how we would calm and counsel Rhi when she would be subbed. And during this another short was won and she managed to slide in and scored. Counselling session cancelled. Two-nil to South at half time.
The start of the second half was a bit different. The sun came out but our captain had gone into hiding (points for guessing she was in the toliet), only to return and find out we had conceded a goal in the first few minutes. Rhi, quick to get back on to the pitch, went for a strong ball and dived for it to try and score, though not successfully. Rhi then received a second bump to the head from the keeper (perfectly good reason for LoM there); the prior one was an accidental elbow to the head just as she was subbed on. Kath made a nuisance of herself on the wing, winning determined short corners, and the defence made sure they upped their man marking after conceding.
A few more attempts from South reaped no joy until Anna slotted home a goal, with the ball in mid air; a much needed goal to release some of the pressure. Three-one to South. With Haverhill now becoming frustrating, there were a few more strong tackles. Rhi, wanting a second, launched the ball at goal with no luck and hit the crossbar instead. I attempted a second goal but before the ball was past the line the whistle had gone. And attempt for Lousia (who was celebrating her one hundredth game for South) was saved. Shorts had reaped little reward in the second half until Dani slotted a goal straight against the backboard after some bounce-passing around the D. Four-one to South at the end.
Now for the reasons I was LoM and not MoM: 1) falling over after being awarded a short by my own doing 2) A miscommunication with Rhi seconds before the final whistle, when she said, ‘Phoebe's ball’ and me not hearing if she was saying that or ‘My ball’ and then replying, ‘Which ball?’ I’m thick, I know. 3) The terrible drive home with me as driver (just to secure LoM, but you might as well confirm it).
Rhi got MoM for her midfield derermination but the biggest mention should go to Lousia for her one hundredth game! Honourable mention to Kat who had a fab game on the wing and was fighting for every fifty-fifty ball! Other MoM noms went to Jas, who out-ran the opposition for some great possession, and Bella, who dropped back and forth from Clapham just for the game.
