200 Cards in 200 Appearances

In a match that could have gone either way – more towards the St Neots way – M2s snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. That’s what great teams (like Manchester United) always do! The match started around dinner time; by this time Shin had eaten a few pies and burgers already! Now, up to this point all the other CSHC matches on the Long Road pitch that day had been won: all we had to do was to score one more goal that St Neots. We achieved that but made it hard work.

The M2s started on a positive note and Ash scored from a penalty corner. How many times has he done that this season? Atta Boy! St Neots were passing well but the back line of Nik, Anns, Rosselli, Doug and Mariano held out under the pressure. George was watchful in the goal and came out to save couple of one-on-ones.

In one of our attacking moves, Ash passed the ball to Walshy at top of the D. He controlled it over his right shoulder and in one quick motion hit the ball in mid air for one of the greatest goals ever seen on the Long Road pitch. Baggers, Puds and Menzies kept the ball but were unable to make any inroads in the opposition’s D. Ollie, Herb, Shin and Bhav tried to play high and wide, however something wasn’t clicking and we ended the half with a two-nil scoreline. The half time whistle from one umpire and a green card from the other umpire meant Bhav would sit out for two minutes at the start of the second half. At the half time talk, Menzies wanted us to pass the ball more and keep it. If we have the ball they can’t score!

In the second half, St Neots moved the ball better and earned a few penalty corners. George saved a few blinders but they scored two goals in twenty minutes. Their midfield play was good and they could have scored more than two goals. Time to wake up.

With the clock ticking and five minutes left, Ollie passed the ball from the right of the D. I think it hit the St Neots defender and popped up; Walshy was there again and hit the ball into the net! The crowd roared! That goal reminded me of another Manchester United legend - Adnan Januzaj! What a poacher goal! With three minutes left and St Neots piling pressure, a big stick tackle by Bhav in the midfield meant: yellow card – sitting out for the last three minutes!

After the final whistle there were no handshakes because of COVID-19; Namastes and elbow shakes ended the dramatic evening.
