The Rise of the Mighty 3s

One of two clear signs of a growing hockey club is the reinforcement of various teams, either with new players to the club or gaining the allegiance of players from the team above (for one reason or another). A heaving 1st and 2nd team leaves the 3rds with an embarrassment of riches for the league in which we find ourselves. The other sign of a growing hockey club is in measuring promotions and this is clearly the target, as we have languished far too long in the boggy depths of Div 4NW, and we have laid down the gauntlet as we find ourselves first in the early league table.

Last week, as he lay in bed, Connor found himself scratching his head as he nursed his hangover from the weekend prior – “I’ve got too many players!” he gently mumbled to himself, as he reached for his tumbler, still half full with single malt scotch – his ice long gone. Having been voted in as captain at the end of last season he knew he had the full support of last year’s old guard, yet with four players coming down this weekend from the team above, he knew he was obligated to make space in his old guard, whether he liked it or not. They would certainly not like it, but would they understand? “Look guys…” he started to text, welling up inside… “my hands are tied… I’m so sorry…” he continued, despite his vision going blurry from the tears forming in the corners of his eyes. Feeling truly dreadful inside, he then turned to his night stand, kissed the picture of Gando he kept there, and turned off the light as he quietly wept himself to sleep long into the night.

Along came Saturday, and so did the rain. Now, other than the obvious cold and wet, rain holds many meanings – and today’s particular meaning was one of washing away the old and bringing life to the new. With a very strong squad assembled, the quality of which was reminiscent of a 2nds team from any other preceding season, we boldly strolled on to Fortress City. And, after a couple of touches on the ball, we just knew. We just knew!

In every part of the field, in every position, man for man and as a team, I don’t think it inappropriate to remind ourselves and to let the readers know that we outplayed them as the score-line suggests. Yes, we had goals, but we also defended stoutly, and in the midfield we controlled the game. By half time the opposition had capitulated, shouting at each other in complete disarray.

If individual merits were to be awarded, every player for South would have come away with a burly chestful. Just know that Connor’s selection dilemmas won’t get any easier, but the hockey will only get better. Not only has the bar been raised, a clear message has been sent today. Div 4NW, we’re coming for you.
