Worth the wait!

The greatly anticipated Cambridge South derby day arrived much sooner in the season than perhaps both sides would have liked… but due to unfortunate events involving injuries in the earlier games, the match was postponed until the following day.

The anticipation built overnight and both teams were ready and raring to go by Sunday lunchtime. The sun was out and with the starting sticks in chants both declaring “SOUTH”, the whistle blew and we were off. Within the first 2 minutes, forward Anna hit one in the back of the net and the L5s were off to a good start. As play continued, so did the goals, coming from Susanna, Polly and even defender Nicole got a piece of the action. Trooper Liandi took a dive up the wing as she paced the ball up the pitch – but even this tumble couldn’t stop her from striking and taking us up to 5-0 at half time.

With plenty of subs, our energy didn’t fade in the second half. As we were jogging back to our positions to resume play Sarah declared that she wanted to score to make it 3 games in a row… It seems these are the magic words as 30 seconds later she did what she does best – her classic smack to the left post, bringing us 6 nil up. This was promptly followed by her second goal after a fast run, pass, return, and strike. Polly followed suit also getting her second goal in the match, and Emma her first for Cambridge South. Liandi took us up to 11-0 by the final whistle after some beautiful goals from short corners.

Great play by our defence Rosie, Annie, Shree and Rebecca, as well as Kea and Ann’s skills on the wings, kept the ball in our attacking zone. Lou’s side put up a good fight throughout the 70 minutes of play, making it a fun match for all amongst friends. With record nominations for POMs (Claudia, Liandi, Nicole, Annie, Ann, Anna, Emma) the joint title was awarded to Sarah and Polly, for great goals and positioning throughout the match. Top Tip – don’t wipe out your team mates in the warm up as this earns you LOM. Kea learnt this the hard way!

This great start to the season has left us 2nd in the league – starting as we mean to go on!
