If only we'd known...

Dani Arnold

If only we'd known it was the last game we would play until December, we would have treasured every minute of hockey and played that little bit extra.

Despite the atrocious wet weather, the Ladies 2s had another great result against Newmarket L1. Determination to succeed and great drive and spirit from the team saw the Ladies 2s come away in the first half with a 1-0 score. The goal came from a lovely assist from the penalty spot from Liandi (who'd streaked towards the goal and had drawn all the Newmarket defenders to her) to Dani at the top of the D who swept it in past the goalkeeper's leg.

There was beautiful composure on the ball from the defence with Nichola doing her staple sweeping passes. Niamh made some fantastic tackles to break down Newmarket's attack and Lauren worked tirelessly to distribute the ball to the midfielders and forwards. (We must not forget) Bryony also made some crucial runs in the D to pressurise the Newmarket forwards and some fabulous touches to the ball to keep our clean score sheet and to increase that goal difference in our division!

The second half saw the team working hard to retain the ball and create opportunities. Passes from Jenny round the middle saw both Caitlin and Sam driving down the wings and storming towards the D wherever possible. Rebecca worked hard to step in front of her defender and offer those passes to her teammates so we could continue to keep the Newmarket's defenders on their toes. It was this great movement off the ball, great passes into the attacking zone and also the composed stick skills in the D from Jess F and Rhi which saw the Ladies 2s come away with the short corners which the team converted on. The first short corner conversion was a great hit from Jess F (which must have had a rocket behind it?! No one could stop it!) and the team was up 2-0.

In the last dying seconds of the game, the umpire called another short corner in favour of the Ladies 2s. A great effort from the whole team at the top of and in the D saw Lucy doing a classic sweep and deflection into goal.

POM is awarded to Niamh for her great composure on the ball and great one-on-one action. Really well done! Votes also for Lucy (great attacking play), Sam (cracking game), Jess (endless running), Caitlin (great work in defence), Rebecca (awesome runs) and Jenny (fab defending).

LOM unavoidably this weekend went to Sam for forgetting her astros. Thanks to Jess's parents for coming to the rescue with Jess's old pair of trainers! Bryony did get one LOM vote (I wonder who from?) for getting the ball stuck in her kicker.

Keep safe everybody and fingers crossed for hockey returning soon!!
