L6s: an underdog story
Elly BullThe L6s entered into this match very much the underdog – up against a Nomad team made up of players who usually play 1 or 2 leagues above. But the L6s weren’t about to let that little fact phase them. Their tenacity shone through and they completely bamboozled the opposition with their strong formation from the get go. In just a few minutes, both Nicky and Bex had scored:
Nicky: “My goal followed a fantastic singlehanded run with the ball from Kea and then a great cross into the D.”
Bex: “Niamh sent the ball to Kea who drove it down the wing and across the D and I tapped it in.”
Georgia, Emily & Louisa similarly did a fantastic job driving the ball through the midfield, giving Evie & Niamh some great opportunities to break past the opposition. Some excellent defending from Avi (including the odd dramatic dive), along with Annabel, Hannah & Nicole, kept the opposition at bay for the rest of the first half.
Then something happened that most of the L6s had never experienced before – a penalty flick was awarded. Nomads got their shot, bringing the score to 2-1. Not long after, a second penalty flick was awarded! Twice in one match!? Nomads lined up their shot, but Cassie was not giving them a second chance. She batted the ball away with grace and ease.
Nomads had certainly figured out the L6s by the second half and they doubled down on the offensive. Fatigue had started to set in for the L6s - special mentions go to Nicole, Niamh, Louisa and Annabel who had just come from the L5 match beforehand, and Cassie who had played in the L3/4 match in the morning. The Nomads tightened up their attack and managed to get two more goals past the L6s, bringing the final score to 3-2 to Nomads.
Per Jan’s pre-match report, the L6s have many reasons to celebrate, including:
- Several excellent passes
- Some very nice shots
- A few brilliant tackles
- Some huge saves
- Two blooming goals!
PoM was awarded to Kea for playing such a pivotal role in the midfield and facilitating both goals. PoM votes also went to Avi for all the shots she saved, and to the subbing plan which was executed by the team with military precision. All in all, the L6s played an impeccable game – each and every player should feel proud for what they were part of!
Special thanks to Guy and Jack who stepped in to umpire at the last minute.
Kea Haw
