L4s vs Pelicans 2s

Bethan Clark

The long trip up the A10 to King's Lynn was something of an analogy for the match, with those of us in Becky's car on the lookout for petrol stations that weren't completely emptied by the panic-buying... After several disappointments, we finally were successful.

This being our first match against the Pelicans, we started uncertain about what sort of team we were facing, but slowly settled into the game. Despite us having a couple of opportunities on goal, Pelicans scored first. We quickly equalised with a goal from Emily but then Pelicans scored again at the end of multiple consecutive saves by Bex, having heroically agreed to goalkeep. We had several more opportunities with some great runs by Naomi and Steph but frustratingly no more goals for the rest of the first half, which ended with Naomi being taken out by the keeper. So at half time we were 2-1 down.

Restored by orange segments, in the second half we upped our game. Hannah and Becky in the centre were sending lovely passes up to the forwards. Eloise and Sammy's interceptions kept the ball up the right end a lot of the time, and defenders Rosie and Shree had some great tackles and clearances, with Ginny resolutely stopping anything coming down the side.

But we were still were swapping goals between us and Pelicans, very much keeping us on our toes. First Naomi got one to being us equal, before they got one more to make it 3-2. In a beautiful POM-making move, Amy took the ball through a thicket of defenders and neatly slipped it into the goal, bringing us up to 3-3. Emily scored one more to bring us ahead and despite some tension rising on the pitch right before the final whistle, tears and all, we held the lead until the end.

A great result for a tense match and I think it's safe to say that the much shorter trip to Lond Road next weekend will be welcome.

For playing fantastically in the middle, in particular the spectacular goal!

For a bit of drama with the other team and apparently being “too short” (not a quote from South)
