Cop-Notch Performance
Dave AstonSouth M2s took to the field against Peterborough, keen to build on the promising form of the last few weeks.
There were numerous changes from the previous weekend but this didn’t dent our confidence, with the ball being moved round well, with Steve, John, Pearson and Puds moving the ball from the middle into the channels really well, and the forwards causing problems for COP up front with their pace and trickery. South dominated the possession, limiting Peterborough to sniffs of chances.
It was great to see us take the lead from a short corner, the ball expertly stopped for Pearson to place a low drag into the corner for a deserved 1-0. We kept hold of the ball for the rest of the half and got into the break one up.
The message for the second half was to continue playing the way we were and the chances would come. George’s trickery at the top of the D was creating chances and short corners, although unfortunately for him one reverse tomahawk got its direction and height slightly off and nestled on the rugby pitch instead of the top corner of the net! This earnt him lemon, which I’m very grateful for as it brings my own lemon hit rate for the season down to a respectable 50%. However George wasn’t to be denied as he won another short, where the ball was slipped left to him, and a speedy sweep shot was deflected in expertly by Eric. 2-0 and looking good.
South continued to move the ball round the back well, creating more space and opportunities for the forwards. We only mucked this up the once, but unfortunately Peterborough capitalised on a misplaced pass to send the forward through who slotted past George for 2-1 and a nervous last few minutes. However, we saw the job through, due to calm defending from MOM Maz and some great tackling from Pete Richer alongside him. It was great too to see that we gave away zero short corners as we know COP are traditionally strong at these.
Next week sees us play Spalding away with an apparent 17+ players available! Either the lads are smoking something or the newly introduced “away team pub quiz” of last week’s visit to St Neots was clearly more of a hit than I thought!
