A tribute to Taylor Swift

A tribute to Taylor swift ft. Cambs south L2s

There’s never a bad time to appreciate Taylor Swift. And I also remember very little of the game, so thought this would be fun.

Paraphrasing the titles of the glorious blonde haired country pop singer Taylor Swift “we knew you were trouble when you walked in”, Cambridge uni, a worthy opponent so the L2s said  “welcome to New York (long road)” . A formidable opponent known for their youth, skill and speed. They were the triple threat, much like Taylor herself. “If this was a movie” the opening scenes were perfectly set like “a picture to burn” , against a dark and dusky backdrop of long road hockey pitches at twilight (5pm GMT). Almost like the uni team “never grow up” but eternally seem to be between the ages of 18-21 and forever running around. None the less after three laps of the car parks for warmup the 2s with faces all “Red” had to “shake it off” with Jenny’s odd but very appropriate ankle saving jog-run-but-not-go-anywhere ostretch ; ready for the starting whistle “the story of us” began.

“Long story short” the first half saw both sides neck and neck, with some fantastic play from the defensive unit keeping the speedy cambridge uni at bay.  South were the first to score about half way through the first half - uni we’re having none of it. Some say they could hear the shouts of “I want you back” as the team in green charged down a goal, with Cassie doing a grand job to save their impressive shots on target. Battling through the cold , south’s midfield held the centre of the pitch well, with notable play from Hayley who unfortunately had to say “bye bye baby” at half time which was a loss for by “both (all) of us”.

The south team were “fearless “ though because Jenny stepped up to sweeper and “call it what you want” but we all know she made it look easy. The uni team caught us all a bit “breathless” and were able to pinch a goal back through a wee “blank space” somehow on the near post. Would someone just “tell me why?” I can’t stand on the edge of the D when their taking a free JJ? Lemon katie needed to learn the rules a little better but the new rules are almost “sweeter than fiction” and as confusing as any exam she’s ever taken.

Dani had a great half time inspo talk and said something along the lines of “today was a fairytale”  and how we might even snatch a win off the uni side. Provided we play together as a team, as “two is better than one”.  a 3 point win “you belong with me” the captain cried as we faced another 30 minutes of dark and cold weather.   Good thing Katie had the bobble hat of everyone’s “wildest dreams” crowning her lemon as the title she used to monopolise once again found its way back to her. It was “sad, beautiful tragic” reunion of two old friends.

Half time saw a 1 :1 draw but south weren’t quite finished yet. Sarah showed us all how “everything had changed” and she dominated the half back position , giving south the kick they needed to feel “fifteen” again.  Thats “our song” yelled (inwardly I imagine) as the rest of the south team really picked up the pace and kept possession really well through the front lines almost as if they themselves were all “feeling 22”. Tess, Dani and Tiff working really hard to figure out how to get “out of the woods”  through a strong uni central defence and we’re constantly on the run working hard off the ball.

The final whistle blew,  the two teams parted and “are never ever ever getting back together “ until easter next year when south will return for part II to Wilberforce  “together with a smile”  . A great match to play - thanks uni for being so friendly - even when we took you to the wrong place for teas- “should’ve said no” , never mind the welcoming party who were on the “other side of the door” .  Tiff, not fooled by the warmth of an open fire probably thought that was “the moment I knew” we should’ve gone to the Queen Edith.

For wearing a hat on the pitch… the same colour as lemon… it was fate!
