South’s Sunflower Score a Splendid Seven

Rhi Davies

On a very frosty morning, the Ladies 2s were peaking from behind the curtains, will our game be on? Will the pitch be playable? With matches being cancelled left, right and centre it was down to the wire whether the game would be on, which lead to questionable estimation of how long it would take one Jenny Taylor to cycle from hers to the pitch; 20 minutes google advised and ‘Google never lies’ or does it – Katie Gibson? Would Jenny make it on time, or would Katie be right- well either way we were setting the day with a strong candidate for Lemon- or so we thought. Jess & Rhi were playing so there is always time for one of them to get it; place your bets now.

As the girls convened in the changing rooms, in their bright yellow t-shirt we were ready to get started. The warmup definitely warmed the girls up and with the sun high in the sky, it was a lovely day to play some hockey.

South showed some lovely skills with a lot of attacking play in the first half, getting the ball into the oppositions half, making the Nomads keeper make some great saves. Throughout the game the Nomads keepers and defence made some wonderful saves; leaving the spectators to wonder how the ball didn’t end up in the back on the net. South pressure finally paid off with Lucy slapping the ball into the goal, avoiding Jess who was on the floor, not for the first and not her last time. Tasmin double the scoresheet with a well placed second goal sitting on the back post.

The next two goals were benefits of short corners, first from Liandi which was constructed from some lovely, interlinked passing. Second was from our Drag Flick Queen, Tamsin, a fabulous goal, so much so it led to her being voted the team POM.

4-0 at half time, a great first half with the team talk consisting on lets keeping going. With the league so close at the top every goal was going to matter.

Pumped up and ready for another thirty-five minutes of running around in the glorious sunshine. Jess managed to stay on her feet a little better in the second half and was rewarded with here 101st goal and the fifth of the make (Prosecco ready for after the game). Nomad had a couple of breaks, but the defence stay strong managing to give Bryony a very quiet game.

South had definitely not had enough, unlike the umpire who had had enough of Rhi, sending her off for a 2-minute green card, as Liandi slipped South sixth and penultimate goal past the keeper. With only a few minutes to go, the girls were in attacking once more, with the ball this time finding its way to Dani, who’s shot was stopped on the line by a defender’s foot- P-Flick here we go. With no doubt, Dani stepped up and with a fabulous, placed shot added one more goal to the score sheet. 7- 0 and the final whistle went- a win for the girls and a wonderful way to start the weekend!

So. Jenny did make it to the pitch in a record 18 minutes which lead to Katie getting a couple of lemon votes but Rhi’s wayward behaviour and standard tumbles lead to her getting another LOM of the season.
