A game of 2 halves
Ginny AshcroftAs a full squad of 16 we showed up at Haverhill on time and ready to go for the 4.30pm graveyard slot of the weekend. (Notably an hour and a half after the original start time that had been pushed back to allow the maximum number of haverhill double ups to get back from playing Pelicans... but still not enough time for their super subs to get back from a netball match in Norwich... enough said on that)
On we went with a lengthy warm up as Haverhill were still running late so we then proceeded to start late... annoyed? Us? Never.
First push back to Haverhill and we were off, this half South dominated the game getting a reasonably early goal by a solid team effort, albeit amelia landed the magic touch. Our 2nd goal came from a lovely reverse sweep from Emily S, to which Jimmy on the sideline questioned where this reverse stick talent had come from. Unfortunately the aforementioned netball players turned up, one of which seemed to be Haverhills top goal scorer and just like that a goal was scored.
As with any hockey match (played at this level), hockey is a game of 2 halves so off we went into the 2nd half.
2-1, winning but not comfortable. We played on with our mids playing exceptionally well, Sammy, becky, hannah, Rhian and Claudia put in a great work rate moving up the pitch when we attacked and sprinting back when Haverhill made a break. Luckily Ellie and Laurie our centre backs were a force to be reckoned with, stopping Haverhill in their tracks if they dared to get close the 23 line. This in turn lead to a feed of the ball up to becky who saw space and the top of the D, and is if by magic with one fell swoop got Souths final goal. Naomi, indi and Amy worked tirelessly up the wings creating great runs and getting on the posts for any wide shots.
However, haverhills netball come hockey player soon saw her final opportunity to score, a short, and score she did much to the disappointment of eloise, shree and ginny. On the final whistle we won a short... all team up... it was however not to be 4-2 today.
And with that we successfully saw off Haverhill for another day, clawing back our previous 7-0 loss to them and sending ourselves into top of the league position!!
