The winning ways continue

Eleanor Moffitt

I begrudgingly write this match report as I was set up by Claire for forgetting my ‘Lemon Crown’ which I debuted for the L6’s last week. With Mia M.I.A, I was left with no one to turn to write the match report. All I can say is I am glad I didn’t give the main instigator, Claire, my cupcake.

Putting this to one side, I am elated to report the L6’s had another win this week!!!!! (a third win in a row I will have you know.)

The sun was shining on the St. Ives pitch as we took a midday push back. We had a bonus sub in the form of Emma who immediately drove the ball down the pitch past three or four players!

From the get go we were dominating against the St. Ives 4s side. We were making lots of interceptions and winning the ball quite easily from them. We had some very solid passages of play with good passing around the pitch. We began to use the ‘pass back’ option a bit more for which Edge was always there for. May maintained ultra-McCool on the ball, always finding that pass.

It wasn’t long before Vinnie drove the ball into the D from the left, pranced around a few players and passed across to Pedzi to put in the goal. Great start. Whoop, whoop!

It was gutting when a raised ball hit our center mid’s (Big G’s) knee cap and she had to be escorted off the pitch and was out for the game.

Leonie, a new player brimming with potential, demonstrated some lovely pace and some solid tackles. She is in the right place though - the L6’s is where great hockey players are made. As all L6 alumni would profess ‘Born in ‘____‘, made in South L6’s’.

With another interception, we were on the attack again when a pass into the D found the foot of a St. Ives player and we were awarded a short corner. Vinnie capitalised on this meaning we entered half-time 2-0 up!

Coach Chris’s half-time advice was that we needed to choose the easy pass and, also, to move more to create space during free hits.

After half time, the dominance we had in the first half started to unravel slightly.

While McCool was staying ultra-McCool on the ball, Bull got a bit more action in the second half. She was reliably soaking up the more-frequent balls that were coming here way and re-distributing them effectively. Faherty was up to her usual antics, finding the St. Ives feet.

Claire did some alright saves.

It was around this time the most seasoned of all players, Walker, tried to take a short corner from the white strip nearest to the goal. With plenty of beady eyes around, this earned her enough votes for Lemon of the Match. She didn’t get to wear the lemon crown this week. But, alas, she was saved from the match report.

The dynamic duo, Esther and Vinnie, continued to find each other on the pitch creating some truly beautiful runs and passes and it was for this outstanding play that they both got voted Player(s) of the Match

It is evident that each player is carving their own strengths and consistently bringing this to each match. There is excitement and energy in the air as we face up to our last two league games of the season. The L6’s are on peak form at the moment, I am confident we can snatch these two and climb higher in the league table.

We hope with this carry on, another award will be created for the L6’s at the annual dinner this year, ‘The Most Improved Team of The Year.’ Or maybe even ‘Best Team Instagram Page of the Year’. L6 ‘Rate My Teas’, they are coming for you.

Thank you Leonie for the pictures - making good use of your short rest whilst subbed!

Excellent play, cutting through the St Ives midfield. And made amazing Guinness cupcakes for the team.

Wrong short corner line. 30 seconds after taking one from the right place!
