This week the M6s had the late afternoon game at St Neots which, along with being delayed from earlier games, was much cooler than the Mediterranean weather played in recent weeks. Another pleasantly unexpected difference this week was that almost half of the team was made up of juniors and even a senior debute for some. This had the team quietly confident with opportunity to use young legs, that admittedly tend to last longer than their older teammates.
As the first half began, South started and continued to have positive drives and breaks on goal. Many of these were only hindered by slightly wide shots or miscommunicated passes towards the D. St Neots certainly had the fewer of the breaks, however strong hits from their defence, forwards and stick skills from one of their own juniors led them to getting two goals ahead of South in the first half. The first from a strong hit from the first short of the game and the second from drive on the right hand side.
During the break, though, the team remained positive at the opportunities we had created on goal and these only improved. Great running by our wide players, including a MoM winning performance by Tom Hensman, increased the pressure. This was along side the 3 tight centre mid field players blocking long balls and using back forth passes with wingers to work the ball forwards. That said St Neots did have their chances with a number of short corners. However, improving on the first half these were all deflect out or cleared by South.
As the team continued to press forwards, a run from David Anderson through a number St. Neots players ended in a South goal after his hit into the D was tapped in at the back post by Andy Thomas in the later part of the second half. After a number of close chances from South, the game ended with 2-1 to St. Neots, with South feeling that had they had a little longer they could have evened up the scoring. Nevertheless, great improvements of central and wide link up play and first performances have the M6s optimistic going forwards.
