Against a young development Nomads side, this should have been an opportunity for the 6’s to do on the pitch what they usually do better in training. There should have been daring darting reverse-stick runs down the left wing by Jelley, hooking up with Baz who should have been top D ready to receive. There should have been plenty of transfers round the back and then expansive play into the wide open gaps on offer. And the backs should have maintained a high press, suffocating their opposition before the speed and agility of youth had the chance to get going. Forwards like Paul should have mustered all their experience and ambition to move the ball around quickly, enabling the silky skills of his younger team-mates to run rings round the goalie. This should have been a day where Shahzad and Jo (in goal) could have donned their slippers and smoking jackets and lazed at the back being fed grapes by the subs as the tumbleweed rolled across their D. It should have been a day for a gaggle of goals including a hat-trick from Dan G.
And it was. All of the above. At 6-0, it was a quality performance. But the challenge for the squad now is to repeat that fluidity in a points match. Happy Christmas everyone and a winning New Year!
