The Perfect Tackle
Josh Oldfield
It was a bright winter's day at Wilberforce Road, and the 4s were out for a continuation of their winning streak. Oh were we in for a shock!
Many familiar faces in the team this week, just me and Pipes filling in as newbies. Pipes as CB, now was my chance to make my mark up top... and what a mark that would be!
A spirited team talk from the main man Danny, and we were under way.
Right from the start it was obvious we had our work cut out this week, clearly the University lads had skipped on their Friday night out on the lash. Recycle recycle, recycle, the ball goes. Despite our efforts on the press and in defence, before long, we were 2-0 down.
Not all was lost though; In the lead up to half time, we managed to win three or four short corners. Our chance had come! Turns out we were a bit "short" on short corner finesse this week, with no Jimbo power house and no Shin flick. Two "topped" balls (one from me thinking I was Messi) and two slips that didn't convert, meant that it was still 2-0 at half time.
The second half definitely yielded an all round better performance from the team. We played more around the back and generally looked like a stronger side. However, two more goals trickled in. 4-0 down. Realising that something drastic needed to happen for us to win this, I decided if I couldn't make my mark in the game by scoring I would do it some other way. My next tackle was truly beautiful----ly awful. I pounded up from behind to the unassuming young midfielder with the ball. Hearing me coming he moved the ball away to the left. At full stick stretch I leant, reached around him and nudged the ball, just enough to make it look like a legal tackle. Realising the ball was now out of my reach and grumpy at the fact that I knew I'd failed, I simply just fell on top of him. We both tumbled, with oooo's from the crowd. The umpire gave me one look, and I knew. I earnt myself a green and subsequently LOM.
Gando had repeated told me that a little bit of argy-bargy was fine when defending, as long as don't make it look like it's happening! Looks like I need a bit more practice to perfect the perfect two footed tackle.
