M2 1-2 Cambridge City Mens 4

Alex Anthony

A rare sunny and mild afternoon saw the Men’s 2’s face Cambridge City 4’s away at Wilberforce Road. A palpable air of excitement washed over the team prior to the games commencement with the boys seeking a victory to solidify their spot in the East Men’s Division 2 North West league. The start of the game saw South come out the blocks with tenacity and desire, following a now routinely intense warm-up courtesy of skipper John West. Consequently, some well worked attacking sequels of play, twinned with sharp ball play opened up some back post chances. Although South were unable to finish said chances, there was a lot of optimism and confidence to be taken from the prior build up play, with Ed Creedy, Will and Jonty notably all getting themselves in threatening positions. Against the turn of play, a quick counter from the prosperous youth of the Cambridge City ranks ensured a well-executed PCA flick into the roof of the net, taking many on the pitch by surprise. Score 1-0 to CCHC.

Fluid passages of play seemed in short supply having conceded which brought the game to its halfway point. Quiet desperation crept its way into the mentality of South’s gameplay, coupled frustration due to City’s attacking onslaught in open play. Some tired bodies however stayed grounded and positive, showing some real fight for the team. The nominated man of the match, Jim Hockley, worked hard all game, ensuring constant options were present in attack, acting as a vital pivot point during South’s much improved High Line, High Transfer play. Despite this, a second City goal followed from an instantaneous counterattack. Score 2-0. A goal followed for south during a half-defended PCA by City allowing a foot in the door. Yet this was too little too late, as the final whistle brought an end to what was a seemingly frustrating but important game for South 2’s, allowing the opportunity to now focus on our remaining two games of the season against Peterborough 3’s and Bourne Deeping.
