M4 1-0 Long Sutton Mens 2
Matt LangleyOn the day that England lost to Ireland, South took the field to hold up their end of the bargain, and bring the points home.
South showed a dominance throughout, but started the game with particularly lush dynamic running up front. Newcomer Owen, playing his midfield debut, linking well with the attacking line playing wide and hitting the options on the baseline time and again.
It was soon clear that South had their dominance due to complete control in the middle of the pitch. Jordan provided a brick wall style of CDM that's fast becoming a trademark of his, and making the defence largely redundant at times. This allowed the other midfielders to run circles around Long Suttoners. Notably Gabe literally running circles around the larger ..'obstacles' - when he missed a tackle, he simply ran back round and tried again!
Ali provided a steady supply of defence splitting passing to give the forwards some attacking practice - and did they need it!
Some would point to Jamie for the lack of goals, having to wear his second string glasses after his choice pair were smashed off his face against Ely the week before. Mr Shanahan also almost produced a majestic goal, juggling the ball on his stick, to spin round and volley it not far from the post. Eye witnesses were weak at their knees from the shear majesty and daring of the shot... but otherwise it was pretty dangerous and highly illegal. Senior Chalks spin attack was also mis-firing and didn't bare fruit on this occasion!
Eventually even the M2's drop down Anssy got fed up of the lack of breakthrough and started venturing into the unknown - the oppositions D.. Prophetic for goals in his near future...who's to know?
South maintained pressure and the break through did eventually come, from non-other than the other M2's drop down Will H, pouncing on a keeper deflection with the instincts of a pissed off cat.
A second goal should have followed shortly, with Kerny ploughing down the right wing and smashing a delicious cross along the goal mouth. Temporary forward for the day Matt L won his lemon by doing everything right except putting it in the back of the net at the far post.
The game ended with Souths defence hogging all the play, disguised as Long Sutton pressure. The likes of Pash, Danny and Seb must have gotten bored of running up and down the wings all day just to see the forwards miss another chance, they thought they'd join Martin in their own D and see out the game with 5 straight short corners.
With no real last minute drama, South took the points with a 1-0 win, further impressing themselves on the middle order of the league.
Notable mention to Ben Lye... not sure he had anything to do all game, but did manage to sneak by the lemon vote after point blank kicking the ball into Danny's mid-rift under no pressure.
