A really fun one
Sandy TaylorI've been hyping this one for a while and everyone's probably bored of it, but here it is for posterity: this was the first of several key promotion matches for the 6s, as well as the first points-gaining league game since before Christmas. A key one to shake off the dust quickly, especially against an Ely team that we knew to be very disciplined and dangerous with an excellent forward line. Engagement was the name of the game: don't be reckless, do be constantly in the fight. That's what I said at the start anyway.
Things started quite explosively. Both teams wanted it, and the first few minutes alone saw a lot of aggressive play across the whole pitch. Fortunately it was South that took the first goal, Craig smashing home an already-characteristic reverse past Ely's already-annoying keeper. 1-0!
Over the next 15 minutes Ely showed their own spirit. Suddenly it was South under pressure, conceding not one but two goals, I think both to short corners at which Ely were very dangerous indeed. All there is to say here is that we didn't back down, and near the end of the most energetic half for a while we took our equaliser. 2-2 into half time.
In the second half things finally swung truly in South's favour. After one goal took us to 3-2 it was tight, but 4-2 with maybe 15 minutes to go was starting to finally feel more comfortable, and pushing up to 5-2 with minutes to go really sealed it. Ely never stopped fighting though, more than one comment later mentioned how the scoreline felt a little lucky after such a close-fought game. When the whistle finally went I don't think I've seen the 6s so cheerfully exhausted before.
If that all sounds a little light on details, that's because I can't actually remember much more than the scoreline. But I do remember that James Morrison got man of the match, again, for a second goal in that many games. Not bad for a wing back, pretty sure both were field goals!
