Nice day for hockey

Rebecca Jarvis

Frost gone, sun out and a happy team of Fives assembled at St Mary’s pitch.* Up front we had Rittman, Nicky, Elodie, and Pedzi. Midfield was handled by Rosie, Amy, Lyra, Josie and Charlotte. Defence provided by Vicki, Rebecca, Lou and Astrid.

The game started well with the advance by Ely City 2’s rebuffed and counterattacks coming quickly from South. We edged up the field, moving the ball around and had a feeling that we were in with a good chance. Ely rebounded, applying pressure again and despite strong defence, just before half time a sneaky goal snuck in.

The second half saw some great passing up both wings but not quite getting the ball in the goal. Ely once again applied pressure and after a battle in the D with multiple shots, which Tadi masterfully kept at bay with quiet calm, an unlucky deflection led to Ely’s second goal.

Several short corners were successfully defended but another scuffle in the D, close to the goal line, saw Ely awarded a flick which they converted.

POM nominations for defence by Rebecca and specific shout outs for Rosie’s runs, and Charlotte and Josie’s midfield interceptions. POM was won deservedly by Tadi for her awesome performance.

South fought valiantly. Lyra took a nasty hit on the ankle but quickly bounced back and fought hard until the end. Vicky took a tumble, but so elegantly that she earned herself a LOM vote. Other LOMs nominated for trying to sub during a short corner. *Ultimate Lommage for Rebecca, who admitted to going to the wrong pitch. A special strategy award for Pedzi, for not admitting going to the wrong pitch until after LOM was awarded ;)
